Dream weddings in Vienna

For centuries, the Austrian empire was known for its successful dynastic marriages. This was even reflected in a famous saying: ‘Let others wage wars – you, happy Austria, marry.’

These times are long gone but Vienna continues to be a popular wedding location even today – and the Josefstadt, in particular, has everything you need for a perfect wedding.

With its idyllic garden, the baroque Palais Schönborn – which today houses the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art – offers a particularly romantic setting. Another baroque palace, the stately Palais Auersperg, accommodates up to 1,000 guests in its splendid banquet halls and garden – a great venue for sumptuous weddings. Piaristenkeller, a 400-year-old monastery cellar, seats up to 190 guests at its long banquet tables. Its spacious wine cellars are also ideally suited for hen and stag nights.

For those who want a religious ceremony there is one of Vienna’s most beautiful wedding churches: the Roman Catholic parish church of Maria Treu. The big square in front of the baroque church, bordered by the monastery, the church and the convent, is reminiscent of an Italian piazza and offers ample room for a guard of honour, a reception with refreshments, or even a horsedrawn carriage for the newlyweds.

Dream location

Preparations for a wedding should start about a year in advance. Palais Schönborn, Palais Auersperg and Piaristenkeller are socalled dream wedding venues that can be booked via Municipal Department 63 so that you can be married by a registrar.

Once you have your dream location you also need a dream dress. Luckily, you don’t have to venture far for that, either. Italian-born fashion designer Maurizio Giambra creates sensational dresses in his studio in Lange Gasse. Proud mothers of the bride find a wide variety of hats to complement their outfit at the nearby Hutsalon Viktoriya, and grooms will find gentlemen’s outfitters like Atelier Image and Straub Vienna within walking distance.

And everything else you might need for your dream wedding is there, too: florists, wedding planners, confectioners, dancing schools, beauticians, photographers, etc. – the Josefstadt has it all.
