SUMMER IN THE DISTRICT

One thing is for sure: Summer is never boring in the 8th district. Here are just a few ideas.

A perfect summer day in Josefstadt might start with an open-air yoga session at Yogaria, followed by breakfast in the morning sun at an outdoor café. Try Café Hummel, Zimmerservice, the Sunday brunch at Café Hildebrandt, or the tiny Café Tagsüber on a cloudy day. Wellfed and satisfied, you can then set out to explore Vienna’s smallest, but probably most charming district. A great place to watch the sunset is Dachboden, the rooftop terrace of 25hours Hotel. Technically, it’s not part of Josefstadt anymore, but let’s not be fussy.

Not going anywhere this summer? You can still take a culinary journey around the world right here in Josefstadt. What about a short trip to Croatia (Konoba), Italy (Pizzeria ViaToledo) or Thailand (Mammamon)? And if you want to experience a typical Viennese wine tavern (Heurigen), Weinstube Josefstadt is just a short walk away. For dessert, we recommend one of the many excellent ice cream parlours such as Schelato, Leones Gelato and Gelato Carlo. And if you want to raise a glass or two, try Vini per tutti for international wines, Grande for cocktails and achtundzwanzig taproom for beer.

Get moving. Sporty types can play bad- minton at Hamerlingpark or table tennis at Tigerpark. VHS Josefstadt offers outdoor parent-child yoga classes at Hamerlingpark and outdoor yoga at Schlesingerplatz.
If you prefer to exercise your mind rather than your body, you can find a wide selec- tion of board games at Café Benno or Brot & Spiele.
Special tip: A guided tour about exile in, and flight from, Josefstadt will be held by VHS and ‘derAchte’ on 26 August.
On 8 June, Palais Freiluft opens its doors again: Twelve caterers are turning the lush garden of Palais Auersperg into a 5,000-square-metreoutdoorrestaurant/bar where you can chill out after work (from 16h) or even from 11h on Saturdays.

Music. On 30 June, the Michaela Rabitsch & Robert Pawlik Quartet will play at Piaristenplatz as part of the ‘Jazz & Genusstag.’ And local hero Hans Tschiritsch will curate an open music session at Tunnel on 22 June.

It’s movie time. Open-air cinema is one of the best things about summer. From 9 to 12 June, Volxkino will bring four classics to the picturesque Jodok-Fink-Platz: ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?’, ‘Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte’, ‘Bulworth’ and ‘Silver City’.
And just a stone’s throw away from Josefstadt is Rathausplatz where you can not only watch world-famous operas and musicals on a huge screen but also enjoy a diverse range of culinary offerings.

Vintage pop-up shop. Last but not least we are proud to announce our first ever pop-up shop: Exclusive vintage design by local artists and internationally renowned designers will be available on 23 and 24 June at our office and in the garden café of CupCakes Wien.
